What is a bureau of Indian Education Grant School?
The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) grant Schools are educational institutions that receive funding and support from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Education. These schools, commonly located on or near Native American reservations, serve Native Americans and Alaska Native students. The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas through its Board of Education governs KNS.
Who is Eligible for Enrollment?
Kickapoo Nation School operates as a BIE Grant School. As such, we fall under federal guidelines for eligible Indian (Native American) students Those guidelines define “eligible Indian students” as a member of a federally recognized Tribe or a total of 1/4 degree Indian.
Needed documentation is a copy of the student’s Tribal Enrollment Card or Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB). If neither of these is available, a CDIB for the parent with the student’s birth certificate, or a CIB for a grandparent with the student’s and the parent’s birth certificate can be used. For more information on federal guidelines for Indian education, see Code of Federal Regulations title 25, Part 39, Subpart A, Section 39.2
All native students who meet the above criteria mat enroll at the Kickapoo Nation School. The following documents are needed for the registration to be considered complete:
Birth Certificate
Social Security Number
Degree of Indian Blood (see above)
Current Immunization Record
A physical is recommended for Middle School students and is required for participation in athletics.
Enrollment for students who do not qualify as Native American Under the BIE
At Kickapoo Nation School, our funding primarily comes from Federal programs, which are allocated based on the number of Native American students in attendance, As a result, we do not receive funding for non-Native students or those without a CDIB card. To ensure equitable access to education, a tuition fee is required for non-Native students enrolling at KNS.
The tuition fee is set at five hundred dollars ($500) per semester (equivalent to one thousand dollars ($1000) per year) for each non-Native child, or one thousand dollars ($1000) per family per semester (totaling two thousand dollars ($2000) per year). Payment of the first semester’s tuition is necessary before the student can commerce classes, and the second semester’s tuition must be settled before the start of the following semester to maintain enrollment at KNS.
For families seeking financial assistance, please reach out to the school office to inquire about the possibility of requesting a “tuition waiver” from the school board. Your child’s education is important to us and we are committed to supporting all students in their learning journey.
